So I've been debating creating a blog for all of my sports thoughts for quite some time. My debates went back and forth and made the decision that if I was still contemplating a blog by the time college football season started, that I would go with it.
And here we are...the first day of the season.
Just a warning, that I have no real knowledge of football or baseball or what have you. I'm a girl, so I couldn't play those sports in high school or college. BUT...I did play sports and I love sports and my entire family lives and breathes sports. First example, for a summer vacation my dad, mom, older brother and I spent two weeks traveling to the National Football Hall of Fame, the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame. Two weeks in a red, Chrysler minivan in the middle of summer. It was great.
I've also been to several baseball stadiums around the country with my dad and brother, including the Ballpark at Arlington where the Texas Rangers play, Coors Field where the Rockies play, the Astro Dome where the Astros once played, and Wrigley Field where the Cubs play...which was my favorite because Harry Carey was still alive and I got to sing along with him during the 7th inning stretch. And of course Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field, where my Atlanta Braves play. I remember having a crush on Dale Murphy, loving Steve Avery, and all the drama with David Justice. I remember watching my dad cry as Marquis Grissom caught the last out in the '95 World Series win, going to Rich's the next day and buying a family set of "official" shirts, then proudly wearing it to school in the 6th grade the next day. It was great.
I also have strong basketball roots. I started playing basketball when I began to walk. I played from 4 years old to high school when I stopped playing organized ball. My best game was in 8th grade when I scored 28 points with 12 rebounds. It was great.
My parents both went to seminary in Louisville, KY so we are all Cards fans. My parents had season tickets when the Cards won the title in 1980. I have met Denny Crum (the best basketball coach ever) and have his autograph on a U of L handkerchief.
But of all the sports my family has cheered for...we bleed Red and Black Georgia Football. That is what I will mainly be covering in this blog. I love everything about UGA football...from the tailgate, to Athens, to the pageantry of the sport...it's wonderful. I even married into a UGA family affair as my husband's grandmother was the first female to receive a football athletic scholarship from THE University. Her dad, my great-grandfather-in-law, was great friends with Coach Butts and my grandmother-in-law needed some money and became what would now be an athletic hostess/trainer/equipment person.
I have season tickets this year and can't wait to be at every home game.
More to come...but that's all for now!
